President’s Message – February 2012

Message from your F.V.W.G. President, Gary Burns

Our January Hands on night was a great success. Thanks to Lance for having Allan and Collin doing the chips fly portion at 6:30 to 7 PM. What a treat. Two very talented turning members of our club showing just a tidbit of their talent.

Another thanks to Lance for setting up the hands on night and getting our lathe captains Beverley, Jay, Allan, Murray, Jerry

How can a night get any better, with lathe captains like these people helping  new members and showing all levels of abilities. Wow.

We even had an extra lathe and I saw Brian and Ross showing tool handling to members on that lathe. (The new members ended up renting the club lathe)

Thanks to you all for a excellent night.

This Thursday night Feb 9th we are  fortunate to have Vijay, the owner of Western Mohawk finishing Supplies come out of retirement to do our demo on wood finishing. Vijay has taught wood finishing courses for years and is extremely knowledgeable and talented in this field.

I have asked him to bring some supplies to sell to our members, so bring  cash. It will save you a trip to his store in Vancouver.

The library will now be setting a small part of the table to selling Mags, VHS  and other library stuff, as well as rentals.

Don’t forget to take a free ticket at the door for a neat door prize.

At our last executive meeting we agreed to set up a road trip March 10th 2012 to see Alan Stirt in Anacortes, 9 AM to 4 PM, lunch included $40.00 pre-registered or $45.00 at the door.( USA funds ).  I have contacted their club president and he has welcomed our road trip.

Contact person will be Beverley Pears. If you haven’t been on a road trip you should plan on one they are a great deal of fun. Also Anacortes is a great little place to visit and shop. It is only aprox 2 hours from Abbotsford ( plus border time ) Oh ya, you must have an Enhanced drivers license or a passport to cross the border.

Next, Gloria has arranged for Eric Lofstrom from Puget Sound to be our main demonstrator for our Thursday May 11th  General Meeting. Also to be available for a hands on class on Friday May 12th at Bow River for a max of 6 members. Then a full day of demonstrations Saturday May 13th at Bow River.  Registration and Details contact Gloria. Great job Gloria.

This Thursday night goodies turn is Phil Vetra, Gerry Vickers, Albert Waardenburg, Ron Walldenburg, George Waldbrook and Len Williams.

Remember to donate to the coffers if your not on this list, so Brian can do his job of drinks etc. Wood raffle table donations turn is Gary Kelly, Rupert Klammer, Richard Langford, Jim Libby, Ted Lightfoot, and Jay Mapson.

Buy wood raffle tickets, as there will be great wood from our members and also from all our wood sponsors.

Bring in a few of your newest turnings for the members show and tell, and the Presidents challenge is Functional pieces that hold water. Give aways for both show and tell and the Presidents challenge.

Our guild is about having a great night out. It is also very much about having a great social night. Our meetings will adjourn before the wood raffles from now on so members can have a chance to chat with other members or get out a bit earlier than the 9:30 ish we seem to be pushing.

See you all Thursday night.
