President’s Message – December 2012

A Message from your F.V.W.G.  President

November 8th’s  meeting was a very informative meeting. We had a short talk by Kevin from Langley U Blast, about using sandblasting as another medium for creating different effects on woodturnings.

The main demonstration was Allan Cusworth doing a Bowl demonstration. Which he did an excellent job of by the way. Bowl turning is the main item turned when starting out, and a mainstay for turners, and I hope that demo helped many  members new and old get going on some bowls.

Hopefully you are all like me, and watch a demo and can’t wait to get home and try what we have been shown. I can’t wait to get on my lathe after watching someone else playing, as I want to play too .

Rocco from Port Coquitlam was giving away some amazing wood this past summer. He made a deal with some members to donate a turned piece (in exchange for the wood he was giving away ). The turned pieces will be auctioned off for the Vancouver Children’s Hospital. A great cause.

ANY  members willing to donate to this cause can bring in their donations this Thursday Dec 13th as Rocco needs all donations by Dec 15th. He has offered to post a picture  of the donator and business card  in front of each donation for members wanting to get  acknowledgement and advertising. Not necessary but offered. He also will be willing to donate more wonderful wood for members willing to donate to this great cause in the future.

We are 4 months into our year so all members should be registered by now. If you aren’t see Brian right away. It is only $40.00 which is only $4.00 per meeting. Any new people who are coming should sign up as soon as possible as well.

Dec 13th this Thursday will be our last  general meeting of 2012. So try to make it.

Along with our chips happen, we will be having Bruce Campbell from G.V.W.G doing the main demonstration for the evening. He will be demonstrating a finial box with an accent ring. Check out our web page and picture to see what he will be demonstrating,

Goodies supplied this month by Ed Pretty, Mark Revell, Lance Rossington, Bob Scarrow, and Guthrie Schweers. Wood donations this month, Colin Delory, Dewey Devries, Linda deSilva, Eldy Gandy, George Geurts and Michael Hamilton – Clark will each be bringing something good!

Presidents challenge this Thursday is Square Bowls. Make sure you bring something for the instant gallery, so we can see what you have been working on. You have a shot at a great gift certificate.

Murray and Allan are trying to get the T Shirts and Hats for this meeting, hopefully they will succeed.

Please wear your name tags or get a new one from Brian.  I heard last meeting some members are being offended by being called,  quote “ The older white haired guy.”

We will be adjourning the meeting prior to calling the wood raffle winning tickets, so you have a chance to socialize with other members.

January 10th general meeting will have our Feature Demo:  Jon Magill – Ornamental Woodturning plus possible Friday/Saturday, so see Murray, Mike or Derek if you wish to have a workshop set up.

January’s President Challenge will be Kitchen scoops. Be careful. Heads up for February,  yo-yo’s, or baby rattles, or kaleidoscopes, so get busy.

See you all Thursday night,  and if you can’t make it, I hope you have a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and healthy  New Year.

Gary
