February 10th Guild Meeting
6:30 Arrival and Members Instant Gallery
7:00 Feature: An Evening on Wood Surface Texturing Ideas.
We will start with a short 15min video on texturing by an expert.
Bring your texturing tools and turned items with examples of texturing. (put your name on your tools.) Then we will quickly see what type of texturing weapons members have brought to torture some wood with. We already have people committed to bringing some wood and a plethora of texturing tools to the meeting. See below.
Hands On: We will split into three stations and that’s when the noise begins and the chips fly. Safety will be emphasized! The stations will be facilitated by:
- Ross Paterson at the Vicmark lathe area.
- Adam Christiaans at the Delta lathe area
- Mike O’Leary or Murray Sluys at the work bench area. They will lead the exploration of texturing and field any questions on the tools. They won’t have all the answers but someone will. Maybe you!
Here are some of the great texturing tools coming to try out:
“Nice to get as many people involved as possible and maximum number of different ideas/tools.”
“I can bring one or more of a chatter tool, a reciprocating carver, a dremel (foredom), an arbortec, a burning tool, a small knurled texturing tool (homemade and Wagner), a hand-checkering tool….”
“I can bring a burning tool with 3 different burning pens. A hand held propane torch. Some texturing tools I used to create a kind of a leather look. I have some other ideas for using a mask and burn method if I can get it together for the meeting I will bring it as well. I have an air powered rotary tool I could bring if somebody can find out if compressed air is available. I can bring some wire wheels chucked into a drill for texturing a surface. I could bring some files and rasps as well if desired.”
“I think it is a good idea to have as many people bring their texturing and decorating tools as well as samples of their texturing.”
“All people who want to participate should bring their own wood to work on so that by the end of the evening they have a piece of wood with a variety of textures on it they can refer to in the future. Maybe a small bowl or platter with a wide rim? Or just a flat piece of wood?”
“People always think of carving wood away when texturing but what about adding a substance to raise the surface, this could be done with different putty like substances, does anybody have any ideas about that?”
“I have an electric NSK carver that I could bring.”
“You need a decent size (noisy) compressor for air tools and I don’t know if the school has air available, so that just might be show only. I have one air tool (a descaler) that I tried once.”
8:30 Break – Coffee, Tea and snacks. Goodies from members with last names beginning with M to O
Presidents Challenge – Turned Bird Houses
Wood or Tool raffle donations: bring a tool you haven’t used for 5 years. Bring one piece of wood if your last name starts from P-Z
NOTE: It is unfortunate that Martin Thorne, guest woodturner from Squamish will not be able to do the demo on Copper gilding and patination for our February meeting. He called and advised that his health (knees) are not up to the task and he sincerely sends his regrets as he was looking forward to meeting with us. He hopes to reschedule after his operation.
