Darts Hill Garden Open Day
Over the past few years a number of our guild members have been involved with the Darts Hill Garden Society which is located on 16th Ave in South Surrey. This is a very large and beautifully maintained garden and has been the source of some exotic excellent wood that the society would rather see go to a second life as a turned piece than fuel in a wood stove.
As a result of this association the guild was invited, via Barry Wilkinson, to put on a demonstration of turning and offer member turned items for sale at its open day on April 28. They provided us with a fantastic space, fully protected from the weather, and fully powered. A structure they call the Birdcage as well as a separate tent with tables and chairs.
Unfortunately Barry was away travelling for the event itself however we had three turners present Gary Burns, Keith Ruttan and Bob Askew. We had two of the guild’s lathes set up, operating pretty much continuously making a mix of spinning tops, bowls and egg cups. We also had two speakers Brian Hicks and Ron Krebda and were perfectly complimented by Jean Ruttan managing the sales table.
Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. It must have been the wettest and coldest day in April which kept the crowds away, however for those who did turn up a wonderful time was had. Not least of all the guild members who had a great opportunity to chat and get to learn more each other’s craft and lives. Surrey Parks and Recreation, which owns and runs the site was very pleased with our impact and have asked us to participate again in the fall open day so stand by for another opportunity to participate in a day out in the fall.

Well done all! [Ed.]
