FVWG to show at the Kariton Art Gallery, Abbotsford
Nine of our Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild members are returning for an exhibition at the Kariton Art Galley, 2387 Ware Street, Abbotsford (Mill Lake Park). The show runs from November 14th, 2014 to December 9th, 2014, with an opening reception on Sunday November 16th. Come and see a diverse range of wood art works that started from pure inspiration.
“Turning to Inspiration”
The creation of wooden objects utilizing a lathe has been around for centuries. It can be dated back to the Egyptians in 1300 BC. Traditionally the objects were made for utilitarian purposes, such as bowls and other vessels, platters and spindles. Sometimes these objects were decorated with surface enhancements such as painting and carving. It is only very recently though that woodturning has developed into and become recognized as a singular form of art. Woodturning as an artform is evolving rapidly and becoming increasingly recognized and popular, with the help of visionary artists, galleries and buyers.
The Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild (FVWG), based in Abbotsford, B.C., is one of two woodturning guilds (and the oldest) in the Lower Mainland. The FVWG is also a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). The AAW currently has approximately 350 chapters and over 15,000 members.
The following woodturning artists, all members of FVWG, are pleased to present this exhibition of some of their creations: Ross Paterson, Ed Pretty, Colin Delory, Murray Sluys, Michael Hamilton-Clark, Brian Murphy, Beverley Pears, Gloria Herberts, Mike O’Leary and John Spitters. These artists find inspiration in the natural beauty of wood and they all have their own inspirations for their individual creations, resulting in a wide variety of styles. Come and be inspired.
