John Spitters goes Big and Beautiful

Sometimes bigger is beautiful! This enormous 22 inch bowl by John Spitters is of Siberian Elm that once stood in Darts Hill Garden in Surrey. John turned it on his Vicmarc vl300 longbed which has a 23″ swing.

“Siberian Elm Bowl 22” x 6” wood came from Darts hill, finished with a coat of Boiled linseed oil, then wipe on poly as a top coat.

I really like the colour as it came out.”

Burnishing tool, Maple Burl handle and rod is a 1/4” x4” high speed steel lathe tooling bit with a copper ferrule. A burnishing tool is for rolling the edge on cabinet card scrapers.

“I made this tool because I needed to resort to using the cabinet scrapers to smooth out the cut surface on the Siberian Elm.

I was getting lots of tearout and it would have taken lots and lots of sanding to remove the tearout whereas the cabinet scrapers did an exceptional job with a better than sanded finish.

As a bonus the process was quick with minimal dust.”
